Caring for Your Winter Sweaters

Every winter season, I shell out more and more money for new sweaters. I feel like I'm only getting a few months in before my sweaters become misshapen, are pilling beyond repair, or just hopeless (period). In hopes to stop this cycle that happens year-after-year, I have come up with several tips for caring for your beloved sweaters this season.

1. Make those pills disappear. Did you know you can get rid of those pesky balls of fluff that gather all over your sweaters? Just grab a pumice stone, a new (and dry) sponge, or (my personal favorite) a cheap disposable razor. Lay the sweater on a flat surface, and hold it taut while gently pulling your tool of choice across the fabric. Your sweater will look as good as new!

2. Wash less. Washing your sweaters less can extend the life of your sweaters incredibly. Wash about every four wears, unless you spill, sweat or are around foul odors. I'll let you be the judge of that.

3. Never machine dry your sweaters! Way back in the day, my naive (and lazy) self would just tumble-dry-low my sweaters which would eventually cause said sweaters to shrink over time. Instead, gently squeeze water out of the sweater and lay it flat to dry. Do not hang to dry because this will cause the sweater will stretch in strange ways.

4. Stretch it out. Sometimes, sweaters just decide to shrink. It happens to the best of us. Depending on the fabric, you can literally stretch the sweater back to shape. Stretch the body of the sweater by grabbing the collar and the hem at different points and gently pull. Hold for five seconds and repeat. Do the same thing from shoulder to sleeve and from side to side.

5. Give it time. Allow 24 hours between wearing your sweaters, as this allows wrinkles to dissipate and the elasticity of the fabric to bounce back.

Hope that helps you take better care of those cozy sweaters this season. Do you have any tricks when it comes to taking care of your sweaters? Comment below!
